Cebuano Food of the Day: Magic by JCA Pizza

Way back in the early 90's when I was still in high school there was a pizza parlour that was popular with Cebuanos. JCA Pizza was an instant hit back then because of their affordable and delicious pizzas.




They were also famous for their monster pizza which is a giant pizza prized four times the regular pizza. The pizza competition in Cebu is very stiff as many pizza stores opened up in the past few years.  From big chains like Yellow Cab to local chains like Alberto's to smaller pizza outlets like Ryan Pizzarelli, Cebuanos have so many options when it comes to this popular Italian flatbread. Many stores closed already but JCA is one of the strong survivors in the local pizza wars.

Recently I was in the Capitol area and I was looking for a food that I can bring home. I was parked near JCA so I decided to get a pizza.  The obvious choice for me is Magic.  It has been quite a while since I last ate at JCA and I miss their Magic pizza.

JCA's Magic Pizza is made of a thin crust dough and it is topped with quickmelt cheese, ground beef, luncheon meat, hotdog, salami, chorizo, mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers.  It is like a supreme pizza but with ingredients that you can easily buy in the nearby grocery.  For 175 pesos, I would say that this pizza is a bargain.  The size is good for 2 to 3 people but in a good day, I can finish the whole pizza without any help. I like putting a lot of hot sauce in this one. 

The pizza did not last long at home.  Even if I had dinner already, I was still able to finish more than half of the Magic pizza. Good thing, I bought another pizza for my wife and her parents. I still consider Magic as  one of my favourite pizza flavors.

The Magic Pizza is one of the best solutions to your pizza cravings.  The pizza is big enough and it definitely gives you more bang for your bucks.  This is the best for people who are not after those expensive ingredients and just want to enjoy pizza while watching a movie at home.  If you happen to drop by JCA, order Magic and remember me. In the past year, there have been several restaurants in Cebu that wants to claim "The Best Wings Place in Cebu" title.  The introduction of several chicken wing places cannot outpace the demand for delicious and spicy chicken wings. It is definitely a booming segment as many  Cebuanos flock to their favorite wing place.  Recently, I had a "wing night" with my wife and we restaurant-hopped in two of the best chicken wing places in Cebu. First, we visited the newly opened Bad Boys Wingz right across Bright Academy in Talamban. This wing place used to be a small, but very popular food stall at the BTC and because of the high demand of chicken wings, the owners opened a stand-alone restaurant. The Abaca restaurant group opened its newest outlet that is fast becoming the trendiest bakeshop/cafe in Cebu.  The Abaca Baking Company started serving fresh breads and pastries to Cebuanos a few weeks ago.  It is located at the Crossroads Mall in Banilad. The Abaca brand has always been a favorite among upscale diners and this new bakery/cafe/coffee shop is another sure hit by the famed restaurant group.
