Kalami Cebu! - A Gastronomic Guide to Cebu

Cafe Laguna has always been one of my favorite Filipino restaurants in Cebu.  When I dine at any of their restaurants, I know that it is going to be a feast.  Last year, I was in their 24th-anniversary buffet and I definitely had a heavy dose of #happytummy. On September 28, 2016, Cebu's longest running Filipino restaurant will treat Cebuanos to a grand buffet for only Php 499.00 ++.

Would you exchange your relaxing Sunday evening with your family for a crispy pata dinner with Jericho Rosales ? Your answers may be varied, but yes, I did it once and it went well. Jericho Rosales is now the new face of homegrown Kuya J Restaurant.   The Cebuano restaurant brand is setting its sights to become of the dominant Filipino restaurants in the country.

I was expecting the restaurant to be just a typical Filipino restaurant that serves favorites like crispy pata, sinigang, sisig, pansit, and kare-kare. After eating at Luwag, I realized that Filipino cuisine is constantly evolving and once in a while we get to try "new" dishes inspired by the food cooked by our grandparents.

Golden Cowrie has always been one of my favorite Filipino restaurants here in Cebu.  I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that they now serve breakfast in Robinsons Cybergate.  Their loaded breakfast sets range from 69 to 139 pesos only. I got to try some of their items when Lyndon Escosura invited me for a late breakfast.

Way back when I was a little boy, fried chicken is one of the dishes that I look forward during special occasions. The ideal fried chicken must have crispy skin and succulent meat. In the 80's that were many friend chicken places that became so popular.  The advent of fast-food chains and the general improvement of the buying power of Filipinos somehow caused the decline of the what used to vibrant fried chicken segment. One of the few names that managed to survive is Max's Fried Chicken. The fried chicken restaurant chain has the tagline "Sarap to the bones!".  Indeed, their fried chicken is delicious to the bones.  I can probably finish a whole Max's Fried Chicken on a good day.  When a balikbayan goes home to the Philippines, he/she would definitely want to eat in a Filipino restaurant.  My mom is no different.  One of her favorite Filipino restaurants in Cebu is Cafe Laguna. A couple of weeks ago, I drove her to the Basilica Minore Del Santo Nino because she wanted to hear mass with her friends. My wife and I tagged along.  After the mass, my mom said that she wanted to have an early dinner.  I decided to take her to Parilya, Laguna group's newest restaurant at the South Road Properties. It was definitely a wise decision as we had a very enjoyable and filling dinner.

After a hot summer afternoon going to Busay , we were looking for a good place to eat after coming down from the mountain area of Cebu City.  Our host, Lotlot Madura, wanted to eat Filipino dishes and she suggested Manggahan at Wilson Street in Lahug. Manggahan has somehow established a niche of serving Cebuano comfort food in a very relaxing setting.

Golden Cowrie, one of Cebu's most popular local restaurants has opened a branch in A.S. Fortuna, Mandaue City. Aside from offering their Filipino cuisine specialties, their branch in Mandaue has a daily Eat-All-You-Can buffet.  Golden Cowrie's Feast-All-You-Can is priced at an affordable 299 pesos for lunch and 399 pesos for dinner.
