Kalami Cebu's 32 Memorable Food and Drink Items of September 2016
An awesome month has just passed and it was a hectic month for my tummy. September is my birth month. I expected it to be busy and it really was. I actually had a hard time picking the 32 best food and drink items of the month. Why 32? Well, Cebu has a phone area code of 032 making that number somehow significant to Cebuanos and to Kalami Cebu.
Here are my Top 32 Food and Drink of September 2016:
1. Yangnyum Chicken (Oppa Chicken)
When it comes to fried chicken, one of my favorites is the Korean-style fried chicken. Early in the month, I had a meeting with some students of USJ-R and we had the sweet and spicy chicken of Oppa Chicken. Oppa Chicken is located at the Terraces of Ayala Center Cebu.
2. Cheeseburger (FrontGate)
One of my preferred places to stay while waiting for my wife in Cebu Doctor's Hospital is the Baseline area. The Baseline complex in Juana Osmena St. has a lot of food options. One of them is Frontgate Burgers. Flavor-wise, this place is a good alternative to Jollibee and McDonald's.
3. Ham and Cheese Sandwich at Keso
I have been spending a lot of time at The Greenery in Mabolo. That place has so many options for meals. One day, I wanted to take a sandwich home and one of the best places for sandwiches is Keso. You can never go wrong with bread that has grilled cheese and meat.
4. Pizza and Pasta at Patty Pie
This newly opened Pizza and Burger place in SM Seaside City Cebu will sure make pizza and burger lovers go crazy. The restaurant concept is based on the owner's love for pizza and burgers. This is also a very nice looking pizza/burger place that Instagrammers should check out.
5. Patty Pie's Molten Chocolate
It's really good. An awesome dessert to share to cap a fine meal at Patty Pie. It's their version of the Molten Lava cake with ice cream and strawberries. It's pure indulgence plus it costs less than 200 pesos.
6. Banana Pancakes at Camden Cafe
There is a new all-day breakfast place near Chong Hua Hospital. I love to go to Camden Cafe to eat pancakes and drink some mimosas. Their omelets are great as well.
7. Grilled Blue Marlin at Parr't Ebelle
When I crave for grilled fish, I usually go to this Karenderia near SM City Cebu. Parr't Ebelle serves grilled fish and pork as well as tinuwa, nilarang, and kinilaw. A wonderful place to have a Sutukil (Sugba-Tuwa-Kilaw) lunch.
8. Honey Bread at Tom N Toms Coffee
Well, South Korea's version of Starbuck's has finally opened a branch in Cebu. Aside from coffee and tea, they serve some delicious baked creations to pair with their beverages. Tom N Toms Coffee is located at The Greenery in Mabolo.
9. Congee at Hap Chang
One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Manila has opened a branch at Robinsons Galleria Cebu. I ate congee and chicken feet the last time I went there. I will be back soon with some friends to eat their famous cold cuts.
10. Specialty Pizzas at Giardino di Mare
There is an excellent pizza place over at Cebu Yacht Club in Mactan. I finished a whole pizza (combination of Vagabond and Tongue of Fire) on my first time eating there. I capped my dinner with some of their flavorful gelatos.
11. Birthday Pancit at Majestic Restaurant
A day before my birthday, I treated some of my friends from Cebu Blogging Community to lunch. We had the set meal from Majestic Restaurant and we really enjoyed it. The birthday pancit is truly special.
12. Hawaiian Pizza from S&R
The Cebu Blogging Community (CBC) held its first Blog Bites last September 10. It was attended by the newest members of CBC and for snacks, we had S&R pizza's newest variant, the Hawaiian Pizza. What I like about the pizza at S&R is its size as it can really feed a lot of people.
13. Asado and Intestines at Snow Sheen
For my birthday, I bought some pancit at Snow Sheen in the downtown area. This Chinese restaurant is a favorite among my relatives while growing up. Aside from pancit, I also ordered lumpia shanghai which is my wife's favorite dish of all time. While waiting for my take out, I let +Ramzy Magbitang and +Marie Imperial try the Asado and Intestines.
14. My Kalami Cebu Birthday Spread
For my birthday, I wanted to feature some of my favorite local dishes. I had lechon from our suki in Capitol. The lechon included some dugo-dugo and ginabot. I also ordered ngohiong from Carlo's Ngohiong along with the yummy dishes from Snow Sheen. My guests really enjoyed it.
15. Offal at Wakamatsu Yakiniku
Wakamatsu at Pacific Square in F. Cabahug Street is one of Cebu's top Yakiniku places. I went there recently with +Nezte Virtudazo to enjoy some Yakiniku. I ordered some of their offal options like beef liver and beef heart. I liked it a lot.
16. Taco at El Macho Tachos
There is a new place at The Greenery that offers to solve your Mexican Food Cravings. El Macho Tacos offers Mexican All-You-Can-Eat where you can binge on Tacos, Quesadillas, Burritos, Nachos and more.
17. Tempura at Tempura Japanese Grill
Tempura Japanese Grill at SM City Cebu brings back their Japanese All-You-Can-Eat for only 499 pesos. You can have a serving of Tempura or any of their prime dishes then you can pig out on an unlimited of supply of Japanese goodies like sushi, yakiudon, tonkatsu, maki and more.
18. Spicy Lechon Belly
Cebu's Original Lechon Belly is still unbeatable when it comes to this lechon variant. I am even salivating by just looking at the photo. I recently had some spicy lechon belly during the FoodpandaPH #GoodFoodTour. It was an amazing food tour and the lechon belly is definitely one of its highlights.
19. Creamy Beef Stew (Cebu's Original Lechon Belly)
Aside from the world famous lechon belly, Cebu's Original Lechon Belly in Parkmall also serves this unforgettable creamy beef stew. The restaurant now has a branch that is open 24 hours at the 2nd level of Parkmall. You can now enjoy lechon belly, creamy beef stew, Le chips, and dinuguan even during the wee hours of the morning. Lechon belly for breakfast is totally possible now.
20. Steamed Rice and Salted Egg Chicken at Dimsum Break
We ended up at Dimsum Break Parkmall in our Foodpanda Good Food Tour and I was still able to enjoy some steamed rice after having filling meals at Cebu's Original Lechon Belly and Kublai Khan. I partnered my steamed with some pieces of their salted egg chicken. The pair really worked out together.
21. Korean Mexican Fusion Rice Meals at Senor Kimchi
It has been a while since I last visited Senor Kimchi. This time, I took my buddies from CBC for dinner and we basically tasted some of their top-selling rice meals. I think the servings are quite generous especially for women like +Rea Alducente .
22. Lechon at Rico's Lechon
I had visitors from Michigan and after our meeting, they wanted to go to a lechon place. It is a good thing that there many lechon places now in the city. I took them to Rico's Lechon in Panagdait and we feasted on the spicy and regular lechon along with kinilaw, pancit, and garlic rice. #DaBestGyud
23. Starbuck's Teavana
Starbucks just released a series of unique tea concoctions. I tried the Iced Matcha and Espresso and it made me want to try the other Teavana variants. I truly enjoyed the full spectrum of flavors in this one and I love the color too. Check out the Teavana creations at a Starbuck's branch near you.
24. Pineapple Fried Rice at KauKau
I always enjoy having pineapple fried especially when I go to Ormoc and stay at Sabin Resort. Well, I do not need to travel to Leyte anymore as the newly-opened Kaukau Fusion Resto in Kasambagan offers a fantastic version of it.
25. Garlic Parmesan Chicken at KauKau
Another surprising dish from Kaukau Fusion Resto is their Garlic Parmesan Chicken. Ramzy and Jullian really loved it.26. Menudo at Cafe Laguna
Cafe Laguna recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. One interesting tidbit that I learned is that the restaurant was built starting with the often overlooked Menudo. According to owner Ms. Julita Urbina, the Menudo has been the favorite among the restaurant's loyal patrons way back when it was still a small eatery. I tried their Menudo and it was simply awesome. I would love to eat that dish every day of the week.
27. Tanduay Asian Rum on the Rocks
It has been a while since I drank rum on the rocks. I recently tried Tanduay Asian Gold Rum on the rocks and it truly rocks. I like its spiciness and how it matches well to spicy food. The finish was soothing. It was truly an enjoyable rum on the rocks. This variant is for export only and it is even being sold in the United States. It is now available in Cebu at Morals and Malice. Check out the bars cocktails that feature Tanduay Asian Rum. Drink moderately!
28. Sliders at the Weekend Pit Roast
A couple of weekends ago, there was a pop-up food stall featuring Chef Jan Rodriguez of Ila Puti and Chef Tim De la Cruz formerly of Pig and Palm. The Weekend Pit Roast at The Greenery in Mabolo featured a pig roasted on a charcoal pit. The succulent meat was then used for sliders and tacos. I really want to see more pop-ups like these in Cebu in the near future.
29. Affordable Japanese Food at Jo-Ed's Lutong Hapon
I love Japanese food but you just cannot have it every day because it is pretty expensive. Not in Jo-Ed's Lutong Hapon. This restaurant in F. Cabahug street has been serving Japanese dishes at super affordable prices. I brought +Katherine Anne Cutar and Ramzy there and they feel in love with the place but not with each other. hahahah. ;)
30. Bopis at Tol's
I love innards although I will probably slow down on this food vice. When I saw a place near my house offering some Kapampangan offal dishes, I immediately ordered bopis and kilayin. I remember when I was still in college I order bopis because it was cheap and it will make me feel full easily because it makes me eat lots of rice. This time, I did not order so much rice but I was able to finish my bopis at Tol's. Tol's is located near the entrance of Rainforest Park in F. Cabahug Street.
31. The Chocolate Offerings of Tablea Chocolate Cafe
Who doesn't love chocolates? Well, you can now order your favorite chocolate goodies from Tablea Chocolate Cafe via the food delivery app Foodpanda. 32. Jack Daniels laced Butter Beer at Sugbo Mercado
To cap a great birthday month, I went to Sugbo Mercado at IT Park to celebrate their first birthday. Michael Karlo Lim of Sugbo Mercado gave me 500 pesos worth of vouchers and I went to a food adventure with my podcast friends. I capped the month with a cup of Jack Daniels Butter Beer. I guess the Harry Potter fans have grown up as well. Check out Sugbo Mercado at IT Park, Cebu Business Park, and soon somewhere down south.
I am pretty sure I gained some pounds this month as well as another year to my age. September was joyful and I am looking forward to more happy memories for the rest of the "ber" months. Happy eating and let's have a Kalami Cebu food trip sometime. Leave your comments or send me a message at my Facebook page or at Instagram.
